And Floris V was the best known Count ever to reign Holland (1256-1296) His nickname in history is "Der Keerlen god" wich means "the Idol of the Commoners") Son of Justinus Kievits, follows below, mothers name not known, |

Jan de oude Kievits was the son of:
| Justinus Kyvit
Kievit born in 1255, in The low
countries, and died arround 1300 ( The Netherlands) He
was the states-councilor. This was the time when Count Willem II (1234-1256) was appointed as "Rooms Koning". It underlined the high status of the House of Holland in Western Europe. Followed by Count Floris V (1256-1296) From here-on details become lost in the mist of the dark ages, They probably were well established in the Low countries befor the year 1000 AD an might have fought on the side of Dirk I , the first Count of Holland by appointment of the Emperor (922) And it is thought that the liniage connect with the Carolian nobility of that period, and goes back to the court of Emperor Charlemagne. |
Justinus was born only one year after the sixth Crusade ended. Maybe his father had just returned from the Holy Land . It was not all peace in Holland after the turn of the first millenium On the contrary, there was constant fighting of the nobles among themselves, and against the Vikings who regularly plundered the country in those days. Also we see the Crusades from 1096 until 1291 which cost many nobles an warriors their lives.
It has been mentioned in German documents ( State archives in Dusseldorf) that Kievitsen were states-counsilors before this date. We are still searching into this.
In those early days the family was recorded as entering into the ranks of the military where many members of the family were noted for their bravery.
Reliable scources state that before 1200 ad. the Kievitsen (were found of Lower Nobility on the Holland and Carolian Courts) were land and estate owners as wel as Vasals in the Betuwe, Arnhem and other areas of Gelderland. References to Kievitsen are found in works of Jonkheer A. van den Does de Willebois, and B.W. van Schijndel. Also in: "De Brabantse Leeuw" V 113. also by: F. Beelaerts van Blokland. and a book; "Een Honderdtal Nederlandse Families.
