Page 1 of the geneology Kivits -Kievits from the years 1290 to 1500 AD

~*~

The changes or evolution of the surname from Kyvit to deKievit to Kievits Kievids Civits and finally Kivits are quite evident.

Over the centuries Honors were bestowed upon some members, often they married within the Nobility. This usually resulted in merging or changing of the Crest and shields. Titles of the Nobility were bequettable however there is no Known Jonker Kivits or Kievits to date.

On this first page we are dealing with the first 150 oldest known personal names and particulars. There are several more pages, and all will be updated as data becomes available.

For this we need your help!.

The first number placed before the bold printed name are for reference. Also behind the bold printed name you might find eg. "son of Justinus-Cornelis zn" this means being the :son of Justinus son of Cornelis". The number after these names refers to first of the two names, that of the father in question.

If stated born in eg.1455, it means records state he was born in that year. If stated circa or c. this may be the year he was born in. if stated 1455 no mth, means no month or day is known but the year is known. An * (asterix) means: unclear data.

Although there is a book called "Unknown branch Kievits" written by B.V.v.Schijndel in: De Brabantse Leeuw V, 113. we will only touch on some, as I have not personally seen a copy of this to date.

~~~~8*8~~~~
The History of the Netherlands starts with the Gallo/Celts and Batevieren, before Ceasar's invasion in the first century BC.
Emperor Charlemagne was a Netherlander himself and in the 9th century subdued the Fresians, Franks and Saxons.
The distiguished Kievits name goes back to this time and was first recorded in Holland, where the name became noted for its many branches, each house acquiring a status and influence envied by the princes of the region
Holland was ruled at the time by Count Willem II, He was chosen in 1247 and coronated "Romano Rex" in 1248 in Achen Germany. On one of his conquests against the Friesians he fell through the ice in Hoogwoud, and got consequently clubbed to death.1256
The year 1255 AD. and the 4th. Crusades had finished one year earlier. On one estate of a noble family familiar on the courts of the Low Countries; when the sound of a new born baby was heard, they named the boy: Justinus
Some interesting explanations
Baljuw or baljiouw: ( Latin Ballious or baljulivus; Headmaster Representative of the Earl or Duke in part of his domain, in this case the "Graaf" of Flanders or Holland. In other parts of the Netherlands they where called "Dorst" "Ruwaard" "Ambtman" "Marschalk".
Together with " Mannen" they formed the " Baljuw de Hoge Vierschaar", Judging in criminal cases and reprieves or probation's. They also where the commissioners and authors of "tests and weights" ( measurements and weights). Originally the Baljuw was a ruling position, and in some cities like Rotterdam they where called the "Schout " ( Burgomaster, different from mayor, as they where appointed by the monarch for life).
Baljuwschap: The territory of a Baljuw, In Holland known as eg. Baljuw of Rijnland, Baljuw of Delftland, Baljuw of Schieland. In the case of Kievits, Baljuw of the land van Altena.
Leenheer, and Leenman: (Vasal Feudalism)
The Leenheer is the appointee, the Leenman the Appointed. Titles for the Medieval ruling system, which came out of the Vazality, during the great Frankish period of the Frankish rulers and Kings. The legal position between a Lord ( Senior Heer) in the above cases the Duke, and a free man ( Vassal ) for the protection and services, especially during war, and the Benificium ( later called Feudium or unlimited Lease of estates and or territories. An estate was granted to a Vazal by the Lord ( King, Earl or Duc) for keeping, cultivating and developing, as well as protecting.
Later, as well or instead for, appointing estates , the Monarch would grant a Vassal a title or position as Duke, Baron, Marquise, or high Judge. etc.
Although the relations between a Leenheer and Vassal ( Leenman ) were for an unlimited period, The alotments and titles where hereditary.
The governing system of judging was treated as a private right, and the Leenman in his turn could appoint Judges and hand out local governing body positions in turn.
The authority and even sovereignty over a total country was thus leased ( beleend) , hawked, and even sold. This way in time the German empire was divided into many small states and kingdoms.
Kanunnik: ( Latin canonicus ) Ancient religious person like Priest, Bishop etc. who where mentioned on the Canon ( List ) of the Church. Nowadays a member of a kapittel
Kruisheer: ( Ordo Sanetae Crucis abriv. O.S.Cr. ) An institution of regular Kanuniks, founded in 1210-1211 by Theodorus de Celles. They have their own monasteries and churches in Holland, Belgium, USA as well as missions in North America, Congo, Brazil and Java Indonesia.
Coat of arms:
Not anyone had the right to display a coat of arms, and the Heraldry was bound by strict rules. To have a shield with your families coat of arms was looked upon with great honor. The RIGHT to bear arms, ( and this refers to the heraldry aspect as well ) was something granted or won. To be able to display the helmet above your shield was often appointed by a ruler or monarch, as well as a name or logo. In the case of Kievits - Kivits, it was granted by Karel V ( Emperor Charles the Fifth) and the title "BOIS LE DUC" added under the shield and registered in the book of heraldry. ( Bois le duc translates: 's Hertogenbosch = The forrest of the Duke, also the name of the capital city in Brabant. ) The Latin logo ( translated: without evil intend ) is still a mystery to me.
Jonkheer, or Jonker:
Originally the title of a son of Nobility. In Holland the honorable title of Jonkheer was an indication of lower Nobility. (Higher nobility meaning Princes and Princesses) The title is hereditary, They often started off as pages on the courts of Kings or Dukes at the age of 8, and graduated to squire. It was an opportunity to study and learn the refinements of the gentry class, and the skills in sword fighting for battle. (Encyclopedia Kleine Winkler Prins: Aanvankelijk Jonker was a titel van zoons der Edelen. In Ned. is her predikaat Jonkheer de aanduiding van de lagere klasse van adel. Het predikaat is erfelijk. Adelborsten worden met Jonker aangesproken.)
Poorter:
Honorable member of a city. He was an influential member of the city and thus enjoyed certain privileges. To acquire the position of "Porter" (Poorter) was definitely bound by conditions, one had to earn it ( or in some cases one even had to pay a hefty price for the privilage).
