Page 2 Geneology Kievits -Kivits the years1500 - 1600 I have taken the utmost care in trying to keep the register in chronological order, however sometimes due to new found evidence or birthdate changes, the index-number will not change, But could result in numbers appearing in out of syncronised order. Although much effort is done to keep the list updated, it is not always possible . This happens when a whole new branch is found and added to the existing data. |

We have seen the impact of the Black Death, and the decimation of many families in the previous century. Now we are entering into the early Renaissance and the first signs of the coming Golden Century for the Low Countries.
At the end of this century we see the Kievits-Kivits clan gradually losing their feudal titles. Besides their close links with the church we see them venturing into trades like Linen merchants (Laken verkopers) Brewery, and Millers as well as Architects & Master Mill builders and Farmers. Also the breeding of horses on some of their estates and inland shipping was noted. An entrepreneurial gene which is still evident in many of this family today.

Special attention should be given to documents from around 1600. Many mistakes were made in regard to spelling the family name, and given names were often written in colloquial and nicknames, this is also true with the Inlaws. Also, data was not always complete, a phenomenon we see in church records as well as official ones and testaments. Often the spouses were not mentioned, and dates of birth were very often omitted. This was luckily short lived, and by the third quarter of the seventeenth century this confusion seems te disappear. It probably should be blamed on the Eighty-year-War .
